Common sense answers to your most burning health questions

She was taking what!!!

Posted by doctorjames on February 21, 2008

I want to tell you a story today based on an individual that I ran into in a health care setting…no, not at my office…just an acquaintence…a friend of a friend…

This individual started her journey with a back problem from her work. This led to back surgery after no success with alternative treatments. The back surgery led to a radiculopathy, which is a pathology associated with the nerve root (nerve root is the start of the nerve as it branches off the spinal cord and then turns into a nerve as it passes out into the periphery) that now has caused her to have a drop foot and loss of feeling in her leg. She now uses a cane to walk. This lady is only 46 years of age! But wait, there is more…

She is currently taking Aleve, Tylenol Arthritis, a laxative, Prilosec, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Trazadone, Oxycodone, Metformin, Ambien, Zanaflex, Lisinopril, Hydrachlorathiazide, Pravistatin, Advair, Neurontin, and Thyroid Medication!

Now, I am sure alot of you have no idea what these are, but here is the point…she is taking 18 different medications! Don’t get me wrong, I have no problems with the medical establishment, and I do believe in their own world they are doing right because they are taking care of her symptoms. In their minds, they are winning! They are making her feel better by drugging her for this or that. This is an appropriate way to take care of this type of patient, but here is my point…by now way are they improving the HEALTH of this patient…they are destroying her organs one by one! If she continues on this path, life will not be long and will be harder and harder everyday…but you are right, I know what you are thinking…they have given her the correct drugs and have stabilized her…and I would have to say, I AGREE. But, I don’t agree that they are actually taking any steps to improve this woman’s health! DO YOU???

My opinion is this lady has a deep seated emotional issue…yep, you heard it right…emotional issue, not to mention her poor diet and lack of exercise. From this “simple” emotion, it has wreaked havoc on her sense of self. She now suffers from depression, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, insomnia, incredible back and leg pain, asthma, and hypothyroidism! All of this could have been prevented with the proper intervention! Don’t get me wrong, I know she does have real pain and depression, but this all could have been prevented with this person resetting her subconcious mind and not acting like a VICTIM…rolling with the puches you might say! We have to learn to let go of what we don’t have any control over…a good website for this is On this website, you can download a manual to learn how to deal with any emotional issues or physical pain! It is awesome…go see it and learn it for yourself…it may be one of the best things you ever do for your health!

Folks, this is tuff stuff and I know some of you out there will never believe that emotions that are deep seated can ruin our health…but, I am here to tell you that it causes most all of our health problems including cancer…think about that one for a moment, in fact, here is a website for you to go to to understand how emotions can and do cause serious consequences…

Now, I have told you all of that to tell you this…this patient can be helped! If she wants to turn her life around and is ready to get back to life and does not want to be where she is, she can turn this back around! Isn’t that exciting! Through simple supplementation, a diet appropriate for her body, exercise, and an emotional technique such as EFT, this patient can put life back into her body! Yes, it will take at least one year, but is there anyone who wouldn’t spend one year or even two years to turn their life completely around if you were suffering from this? No one in their right mind would have any problem being helped with this type of condition.

Here is the problem, we still are practicing symptom based care…and yes, I do agree that we are one of the best nations at it with the most brilliant doctors. The fact still remains that we don’t even come close to ranking first in the world for the health of a nation. In fact the latest statistic I read says we are 29th among industrialized nations…29th!!!

Folks, we are headed the wrong direction and it will continue to get worse until our paradigms shift. It starts with us as individuals taking responsibility for ourselves and not relying on a broken medical paradigm of sick and symptom care. This is not health care!

In fact, it was just reported that strokes in women age 30-55 just increased by two and a half times due to obesity! WOW is right!!! We are not doing the right things. We are living our lives with reckless abandonment and not treating our bodies well at all…of course we have to rely on medicine for this or that when we take care of our bodies so badly.

We can change this though, it starts one day at a time. Strive for excellence everyday in your diet. There will be days where you don’t do so well, but it is a marathon…a lifestlyle not a diet for one, three, or six months. Of course you will fall off the wagon here or there and give into this or that temptation. But, if you were good 6 days out of the week with diet and exercise, I would say that is amazing because that means you did awesome 300 days out of the 365!!! That is amazing and something anyone should be commended for.

Remember, it is not a sprint, it is a marathon!!! And remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. If you are a busy person, you have to set “meetings” with yourself for eating and exercising…and maybe even stress free events…like reading a book! What a concept!

I believe everyone needs a planner and needs to plan for the week for your health. You need to know what meals you are going to make at minimum 3 days in advance…5 is better. This takes away the stress. You know what you are going to have and know which groceries you need! Simple! On top of this, you need to put in time for yourself for a half hour workout, keeping in mind the time it takes to get to your workout center…if you exercise for more than a half hour and you are not preparing for a competitive sport or a marathon, you are spending too much time. Twenty minutes of high intensity circuit training is all you need. You should be glad to be done when the alarm sounds at 20 minutes.

So, my point is to start planning…Do it today, don’t put off till tomorrow what can be done today…and that is my point!

  1. Greetings, Dr. Haakenson:

Your page “” popped up when I did a search on the GNM site in
You have my appreciation for this dead-on subject and I do thank you for quoting the web site as a helpful reference. Great initiative!

Just one thing: You have made a special green and bold font. Could you possibly do the same for Every bit helps to educate people as to the true cause of most “diseases” and your page is a wonderful one to accomplish that.
