Degenerative Disease, “IT IS YOUR CHOICE!”

Posted by doctorjames on September 24, 2008

Everyday I have patients coming into my office suffering from this or that. Symptoms that just don’t let them live the life they have dreamed of. They need this medication for that, and this medication to treat the side effect of the other one! They live a life full of pollution simply because they are not willing to make a change.

Don’t get me wrong, I do know the value of medicine especially in acute bacterial and viral infections and life saving cases. What we absolutely need to get rid of is medicating the nation for life. We have done this to ourselves folks! By following our very rich western diet, we have brought degenerative changes on! This should come as no surprise. If you don’t take control of your own health, who will?

It should not take a rocket scientist to understand that all the degenerative disorders we suffer from today are because of our dietary decisions we have made for the past 20, 30, 40, 50 years! All degenerative conditions such as cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, syndrome X, fibromyalgia, obesity, hypothyroid, high blood pressure, and arthritis all respond to the very same dietary change! In fact, cancer has been shown to also respond to this diet by preventing the genes from “turning on.” Here is the problem all of us are NUTRIENT DEFICIENT!

In fact, this diet has been shown time and time again to reverse the horrible affects that these degenerative changes can have on your body. For example, Dr. Dean Ornish is one of the pioneers in reversing cardiovascular disease with a very simple dietary change. Dr Neal Barnard is another doctor who comes to mind who has done the same with type II diabetes. Dr. McDougall, yet another pioneer in lifestyle medicine who works with many patients to reverse these degenerative diseases.

You may be asking yourself, well what is it that can change the health of our nation so greatly. Staying out of the aisles at the grocery store! Basically, you need to be on what is called a whole food plant based diet that is well published in the new book that has just come out called The China Study. Now, I tend to agree almost completely with the China Study, but I do believe that clean, lean protein is also good for us if it is organic free range and grass fed.

It should be no secret that the more organic fruits and vegetables, lean, clean, organic grass fed protein, and gluten free containing grains you take in, the more your health flourishes. Also, the more you get rid of GMO foods (genetically modified), pasteurized dairy in any form, non-organic foods, and plastic filled bisphenol A, the more your health flourishes everyday in everyway! The more grain fed beef, chicken, and pork a person takes in is directly related to diminishing health. Did you know that the animals on our planet consume 70% of the antibiotics in the world? This is because they are in feed lots and are so sick they have to be in order to live! And, guess what…we turn around and eat it at almost every restaurant and grocery store we go to!

You see, all of these degenerative diseases that have been mentioned all are one in the same with a different name! It is a label applied to a subset of symptoms or clinical values. Guess what…WHO CARES! Personally, I think labels are the absolute worse thing you can have. Labels allow enabling! Then, what is the next step, a medication designed just for you for the rest of your life, or until you body gets used to it and you have to take something stronger. I don’t think this is HEALTH CARE, this is SICK CARE! It does absolutely nothing to make you healthier. Sure, it may lower your blood pressure, decrease your pain, change your cholesterol level, and on and on, but really what has it done for you if you have not changed your diet, started exercising, and found a way to reduce your stress?

I believe most medicine, except in the case of cancer and lifesaving medical emergencies, is here to be a crutch…not a pill you take for life! The pharmaceutical companies will love it if you do take it for life, but that should not be the intent of your doctor and you should be very worried if this is your plan. I can promise you without a change in your lifestyle one med will lead to two, and two to four, and four to eight and so on.

This is my medicine…FOOD and increased nutrients through vitamins and supplements! Just think, on a whole food plant based diet you can eat as much as you want. It is not a diet, but a lifestyle. The more you follow an organic diet with clean water and good lean organic grass fed protein the more your labels will go away. Food is your medicine and your jump start is medical foods, supplements, and vitamins. Everyone on the planet must be taking a multi, something to clean your toxins out everyday, an omega 3 that is guaranteed to be pure and potent, and plant based nutrients in the form of fruits and vegetables. If you simply do this and get rid of the “crap” in your diet, your weight reduces and your immunity and your health gets better one bite at a time!

I believe some day they will find out that type II diabetes and fibromyalgia are directly related. They are a condition where the cell is insulin insensitive and where the mitochondria are deficient and are not working as well as they could be because the cell is full of lipids. The lack of mitochondria causes us to use less sugar, and also produces more pain due to lack of energy production and corresponding ischemia. Ischemia creates pain folks! WOW! I hope some of you take this information and run with it.

Health is not about taking 10-30 supplements every day neither. It is about taking certain nutrients, but not about taking a pill for this condition or that just like you would take a medication. I can see some, but some patients that come into my office honestly have one for every ache and symptom. This folks is practicing medicine but using a supplement. Keep in mind, medicine and plants are not very far apart. Medicine in most cases is a plant derived molecule that has been made more potent. Aspirin is from white willow bark, and Tamoxifen is a cancer drug from the Yew tree. I am sure there are a ton more examples, but I do not want to belabor the point. To be honest with you, if you are having to treat yourself for a condition through massive amounts of supplements or vitamins, chances are your diet is deficient and is poor. The cause is the diet! We need to stop beating around the bush and treating effects.

A whole food plant based diet is more simple to follow than you would think. You constantly can eat and you constantly feel satisfied. Doesn’t that sound like enough to try it. Once you start feeling so good, you can’t go back to eating the “crap” and allow it like once a week. This would be like someone smoking and they quit for a year and now you allow them to have a cigarette once a week. I have to believe that one cigarette will turn into two, then four, and then eight. You go back to the old ways once again. That is why this is for life…just like exercise. On a whole food plant based diet you are expected to lose one pound per week! Add in a bit of exercise and now you lose a bit more. But, the really neat thing is that you don’t have to beat yourself up with exercise because the diet alone will bring you back to health. So, I recommend 20-30 minutes of exercise three times per week…again, for the rest of your life!

The studies have been done, and the literature has been cited about whole food plant based diets. In fact, in rural China, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity are rare because this is what they eat! The fact is your body is constantly in a state of change and repair to maintain homeostasis. But, if you constantly beat it up, poor health will result. For example, you take the cigarettes away from a 20 year smoker and in 1-5 years his lungs will become close to normal! Why, cause the stress is taken away and now the body has a chance to heal and reproduce brand new tissue!

I see diet the same way. It is a constant stress to the body producing poor health. In fact, I think a poor western diet is worse than someone smoking a few cigarettes every day! All the food companies making all these processed foods and marketing to us are no better than the pharmaceutical companies. They are all about the same thing…PROFIT! They are loading us up with toxins everyday that disrupt the function of our endocrine system. Not a good thing!

We have to start thinking more about how important our diet is and look at the studies to show people how poor health can be reversed by simply making a lifestyle change. This is how we save lives and let grandchildren grow up with their grandparents, or in some cases children grow up with their parents. We cannot continue to go down this same road. Start today by making a decision to change the way you eat.

At our clinic, when we make a dietary change, clean the toxins out, and nourish the body with clean, pure, and potent vitamins, minerals, and supplements, you won’t believe what goes away and stays away. I manage all my patients with literally the same diet. ADHD, autism, colitis, intestinal disorders such as IBS and Crohns, all can be helped greatly by following a whole food plant based diet too! That is why every patient with some crazy label that enters my office is put on this diet and we get tremendous results.

Please let me know if you have any questions I can answer for you.

The Truth About Diabetes and Why Drugs Don’t Work

Posted by doctorjames on February 28, 2008

I thought all of you who read my blog may enjoy this excerpt written by Dr. Mercola (the italicized part of this blog) on a study that just came out where they actually had to stop it due to it causing too many deaths. The study was on type 2 diabetes and lowering blood sugar to an extremely low level to see if this would manage the diabetic situation better. Guess what? Lowering blood sugar to an extremely low level causes problems! Read on to see why and remember to visit Dr.Mercola’s website at and research any health related topic you can find!

One concept that I strive to make well-known, which has the potential to save hundreds of thousands and even millions of lives, is that diabetes is not a disease of blood sugar.

Rather, it is a disease of insulin – of insulin resistance — and perhaps more importantly, of faulty leptin signaling.

Until that concept becomes well-known in both the medical community and by the public at large, this misconception will continue to be promoted in studies such as the one above, revealing the inadequacy of current conventional medical treatment for chronic diseases such as diabetes, and their erroneous advice about nutrition.

Typically, conventional treatment is focused on fixing a symptom, in this case elevated blood sugar, rather than the underlying disease. Symptoms are generally the way that nature has taught our bodies to deal with a disease – the real underlying biological or physiological problem.

Similarly, treatments that concentrate merely on lowering blood sugar for diabetes while raising insulin levels, can actually worsen rather than remedy the actual problem of metabolicmiscommunication. It just trades one evil for another.

Why the Result of This Study is NOT Surprising

Since most treatments for type 2 diabetes utilize drugs that either raise insulin or lower blood sugar, the tragic result is that the typical, conventional medical treatment for diabetes contributes to the side effects and the shortened lifespan that diabetics experience.

This is what happened in this study as well. Their press release states:

“Most participants in the intensive treatment group achieved their lower blood sugar goals with combinations of Food and Drug Administration-approved diabetes medications. For both the intensive and standard treatment groups, study clinicians could use all major classes of diabetes medications available: metformin, thiazolidinediones (TZDs, primarily rosiglitazone), insulins, sulfonylureas, exanatide, and acarbose.”

Now, why don’t drugs like Actos and Avandia work? Actually, let me rephrase: why do they work so well at lowering blood sugar, yet lead to dramatically reduced health?

It’s because these drugs are what is called “PPAR-gamma agonists.” That means they activate PPAR-gamma receptors, which induces a particular response. PPAR-gamma is a nuclear receptor designed to multiply fat cells. So, the way these drugs work to lower your blood sugar is by multiplying your fat cells at a faster rate – hence making you gain weight at a more rapid pace.

Have you ever had too much junk in your garage and decided to rent a storage space rather than get rid of the excess?

That’s what you’re doing when you take these drugs. You’re consuming too much sugar – which turns into fat, and needs to be stored somewhere — but instead of reducing your consumption, you’re simply adding storage space.

Sooner or later, those fat cells become resistant to insulin as well, and you’re back to where you started – your sugars start rising again because your body has once again run out of storage space. The conventional answer is to increase your dosages, and voila! – you’re well on your way to even more serious health problems, courtesy of your excess weight and continued metabolic malfunction.

Do You REALLY Know What Insulin Does?

Contrary to what you may have been told, insulin’s main role is not to “control” blood sugar.

When blood sugar becomes elevated it is a signal for insulin to be released to direct the extra energy into storage. A small amount is stored as a starch called glycogen in our body, but the majority is stored as your main energy supply — fat. Thus, in this regard insulin’s major role is not to lower sugar, but to take the extra energy and store it for future times of need.

Insulin lowers glucose as a side effect of directing the extra energy into storage.

But, Wait… Insulin is Not the MOST Important Player in Diabetes

That honor actually goes to leptin, because the hormone leptin is largely responsible for the accuracy of insulin signaling, and whether you become insulin resistant or not.

Leptin is produced by fat, and tells your body:

  • how much energy it has; whether it needs more (signaling you to “be hungry”)
  • whether it should get rid of some (saying “stop being hungry”)
  • and most importantly, what to do with the energy already there (reproduce cells or focus on cellular repair)

There is compelling research indicating that the two most important organs that determine whether you become diabetic or not are your liver and your brain. And, it is their ability to listen to leptin that will determine this.

So, how do you make sure your brain and liver can hear the signals emanating from your leptin hormone, and don’t start to tune them out?

If at First You Don’t Succeed, Try Reading the Directions

This fast age seem more concerned about speed than direction, with devastating results. By some estimates, diabetes has increased more than 700 percent in the last 50 years. What does this tell us about the direction we’ve been following?

  • First, diabetes cannot be primarily a genetic disease, since the prior statistic has taken place within the same generation, and presumably contains essentially the same genetics, and
  • Secondly, something that we have been doing is obviously wrong and needs to be changed.

That “something” is diet.

It is difficult, or perhaps even impossible, to actually prove that something is true. However, it is not difficult to prove that something is false. For the last 50 years or so, Americans have followed the dietary recommendations of a high complex carbohydrate, low saturated fat diet.

As an example, WebMD; one of the most visited medical information sites on the web, states that people with diabetes, who also have abnormal cholesterol levels, would be well advised to follow a diet that calls for 50 to 60 percent of your daily total calories to be in the form of carbohydrates.

They also state that table sugar is okay, as long as you readjust your medications to compensate appropriately (i.e. take more drugs to increase your fat cell storage capacity). Using artificial sweeteners in lieu of sugar also gets the green light, but I won’t rant about that here.

While much of their advice is fine, and tries to remain well-balanced, the problem with these conventional recommendations lies in the details. Concomitant with that standard recommendation the incidence of diabetes and obesity has skyrocketed, and has become one of the worst epidemics the world has ever seen.

Eating a high “complex” carbohydrate, low saturated fat diet for health and longevity has been shown to be wrong. Minimal common sense would say to try something else.

What’s the Missing Dietary Link?

That would be an eating plan that emphasizes good fats and reduced non-fiber carbohydrates and starches as outlined in my Total Health Program. Doing so will greatly improve and even reverse type 2 “insulin resistant” diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, many other chronic diseases of aging, all without the use of potentially dangerous drugs.

This article competely explains diabetes in a nut shell. At our office, we use specific supplements from Standard Process with exercise and dietary guidance to produce outstanding results! By increasing exercise, maintaining a healthy diet, and giving the pancreas proper support we can reverse type 2 diabetes without the meds. It really is simple if the patient is willing to change their ways to live a healthier life.

As I reported in a previous article, type 2 diabetes will age you one and a half times more than the average person. This means that you will develop all chronic problems that go along with diabetes one and half times faster. So, when you are 50 with type 2 diabetes, your body is really dealing with the degenerative diseases of a 75 year old!

She was taking what!!!

Posted by doctorjames on February 21, 2008

I want to tell you a story today based on an individual that I ran into in a health care setting…no, not at my office…just an acquaintence…a friend of a friend…

This individual started her journey with a back problem from her work. This led to back surgery after no success with alternative treatments. The back surgery led to a radiculopathy, which is a pathology associated with the nerve root (nerve root is the start of the nerve as it branches off the spinal cord and then turns into a nerve as it passes out into the periphery) that now has caused her to have a drop foot and loss of feeling in her leg. She now uses a cane to walk. This lady is only 46 years of age! But wait, there is more…

She is currently taking Aleve, Tylenol Arthritis, a laxative, Prilosec, Wellbutrin, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Trazadone, Oxycodone, Metformin, Ambien, Zanaflex, Lisinopril, Hydrachlorathiazide, Pravistatin, Advair, Neurontin, and Thyroid Medication!

Now, I am sure alot of you have no idea what these are, but here is the point…she is taking 18 different medications! Don’t get me wrong, I have no problems with the medical establishment, and I do believe in their own world they are doing right because they are taking care of her symptoms. In their minds, they are winning! They are making her feel better by drugging her for this or that. This is an appropriate way to take care of this type of patient, but here is my point…by now way are they improving the HEALTH of this patient…they are destroying her organs one by one! If she continues on this path, life will not be long and will be harder and harder everyday…but you are right, I know what you are thinking…they have given her the correct drugs and have stabilized her…and I would have to say, I AGREE. But, I don’t agree that they are actually taking any steps to improve this woman’s health! DO YOU???

My opinion is this lady has a deep seated emotional issue…yep, you heard it right…emotional issue, not to mention her poor diet and lack of exercise. From this “simple” emotion, it has wreaked havoc on her sense of self. She now suffers from depression, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, insomnia, incredible back and leg pain, asthma, and hypothyroidism! All of this could have been prevented with the proper intervention! Don’t get me wrong, I know she does have real pain and depression, but this all could have been prevented with this person resetting her subconcious mind and not acting like a VICTIM…rolling with the puches you might say! We have to learn to let go of what we don’t have any control over…a good website for this is On this website, you can download a manual to learn how to deal with any emotional issues or physical pain! It is awesome…go see it and learn it for yourself…it may be one of the best things you ever do for your health!

Folks, this is tuff stuff and I know some of you out there will never believe that emotions that are deep seated can ruin our health…but, I am here to tell you that it causes most all of our health problems including cancer…think about that one for a moment, in fact, here is a website for you to go to to understand how emotions can and do cause serious consequences…

Now, I have told you all of that to tell you this…this patient can be helped! If she wants to turn her life around and is ready to get back to life and does not want to be where she is, she can turn this back around! Isn’t that exciting! Through simple supplementation, a diet appropriate for her body, exercise, and an emotional technique such as EFT, this patient can put life back into her body! Yes, it will take at least one year, but is there anyone who wouldn’t spend one year or even two years to turn their life completely around if you were suffering from this? No one in their right mind would have any problem being helped with this type of condition.

Here is the problem, we still are practicing symptom based care…and yes, I do agree that we are one of the best nations at it with the most brilliant doctors. The fact still remains that we don’t even come close to ranking first in the world for the health of a nation. In fact the latest statistic I read says we are 29th among industrialized nations…29th!!!

Folks, we are headed the wrong direction and it will continue to get worse until our paradigms shift. It starts with us as individuals taking responsibility for ourselves and not relying on a broken medical paradigm of sick and symptom care. This is not health care!

In fact, it was just reported that strokes in women age 30-55 just increased by two and a half times due to obesity! WOW is right!!! We are not doing the right things. We are living our lives with reckless abandonment and not treating our bodies well at all…of course we have to rely on medicine for this or that when we take care of our bodies so badly.

We can change this though, it starts one day at a time. Strive for excellence everyday in your diet. There will be days where you don’t do so well, but it is a marathon…a lifestlyle not a diet for one, three, or six months. Of course you will fall off the wagon here or there and give into this or that temptation. But, if you were good 6 days out of the week with diet and exercise, I would say that is amazing because that means you did awesome 300 days out of the 365!!! That is amazing and something anyone should be commended for.

Remember, it is not a sprint, it is a marathon!!! And remember, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. If you are a busy person, you have to set “meetings” with yourself for eating and exercising…and maybe even stress free events…like reading a book! What a concept!

I believe everyone needs a planner and needs to plan for the week for your health. You need to know what meals you are going to make at minimum 3 days in advance…5 is better. This takes away the stress. You know what you are going to have and know which groceries you need! Simple! On top of this, you need to put in time for yourself for a half hour workout, keeping in mind the time it takes to get to your workout center…if you exercise for more than a half hour and you are not preparing for a competitive sport or a marathon, you are spending too much time. Twenty minutes of high intensity circuit training is all you need. You should be glad to be done when the alarm sounds at 20 minutes.

So, my point is to start planning…Do it today, don’t put off till tomorrow what can be done today…and that is my point!

Just Build a Fence

Posted by doctorjames on February 12, 2008

This week I am reminded of a book I read a few years ago called Reclaiming our Health by John Robbins…to paraphrase, it goes like this…

In the preface of the book he writes about a rich nation where people kept falling over a steep cliff injuring themselves badly and sometimes even dying. So, the medical establishment decided to pour all of its riches into world class trauma care like brand new ambulances and an E.R. with the best doctors and machinery to treat these people who kept falling off of the cliff. They would not spare any expense to help these people who were badly injured.

After so many people kept getting hurt, a new group of concerned citizens popped up and asked the government why don’t they just erect a fence? There point was that would prevent anyone from falling off the cliff, and save millions of dollars in health care costs. The authorities and policy makers felt that was just too practical and that people’s health was too important to be left in the hands of some citizen advocacy panel…plus, the medical establishment said with enough money soon they would be able to engineer people that wouldn’t bruise or break bones from a fall of that height!!!

The medical establishment insisted on searching for the “magic bullet” that would save the lives of people falling off the cliff. So, the nation started to spend massive amounts of money on health care…in fact, more than any other nation to help find a cure for cliff falling syndrome. As more and more money went to search for the cure, the nations economy began to suffer and along with it came crime and poverty and various other things.

It wasn’t very long till the nation began to ask questions…wondering if a cure will ever be found for these people that fell off of the cliff…could they invent some drug or replace some genes so the person would recover from the fall. With everyone questioning the decisions of the so called medical authorities, the medical establishment began a campaign which showed pictures of doctors holding little children who were hurt badly by the fall saying “Don’t give up on us now, we are almost there.”

The family members of fallen loved ones started to get fed up and plant caution signs of their own up at the cliff’s edge to make sure everyone was warned so they would not go near the edge, but soon these family members were arrested for trespassing. It wasn’t long before some alternative doctors joined the families and wanted to help out, but the powerful medical association retaliated by calling them the health police.

After all the fighting back and forth the medical experts agreed that they would be the ones in charge for putting up warning signs. They could not leave it up to the families because after all, they were not experts…so, they issued this warning…”Anyone who had already broken both arms and legs should exercise utmost caution when falling.”

Now of course this is a fable, as John Robbins goes on to state, but one that gets the point across…Instead of searching for this or that, or giving a pill for this or that, why not put the money to a logical use like the families thought…erect a fence!!! Most illness comes from our dietary habits, lack of exercise, and stress!!! It is a downward spiral that sooner or later requires a drug to mask the ache, pain, syndrome, itis, or disease…why not erect a fence…i.e. eat better, exercise, reduce our stress, and get adjusted by your chiropractor. Let me be your families health coach. After all, even pro-athletes need a coach, so all of us need a health coach.

Here is my point, we don’t need to find a drug for this or that, we need to educate our doctors and our patients on how to prevent these terrible things in the first place, and when all else has failed use drugs, surgery, and other more invasive manners. It is shown time and time again that symptoms do not appear until the disease is at end stage…that is disease!

Ponder this for a moment…if we take a drug and keep living the same lifestyle, are we any healthier just because we have decreased a number…for example, lowered cholesterol from 220 to 180? If you continue to put high sugary foods and processed foods into your GI tract you are causing another problem that is being masked by the cholesterol number. Diabetics suffer with tryglyceride and cholesterol problems. So you mask the cholesterol issue, but you destroy your pancreas! Now, let me ask you again, are you more healthy because of a pill?

Here is the rib jabber…there is no magic pill! It goes back to taking care of yourself in the first place. Taking your vitamins and supplements and eating a good diet, exercising, and stress reduction. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Insanity, then is someone not changing their dietary habits and exercise habits after something has proven to be an issue in their blood test. You are headed down the road for a disaster…do you want to wait for this to show up?

Instead of waiting for a disease to pop up…why not try to erect the fence to stop these things, or at least halt their progress. All of this can be done with chiropractic care and proper nutrition. I tell my patients time and time again how organs reflex to the spine to cause sore and stiff muscles! More than 80% of the time this is the case.

The reason this occurs is because the nervous system is interfered with. When it is interfered, it cannot function at its optimum so organs began to show signs of stress. Signs of stress show up on your back and sometimes your ear! Like I said before, this is where you don’t have ABCDitis yet, but allow it to keep progressing and the medical doctor will tell you that you have ABCDitis or ABCD syndrome or ABCD disease! Again, by the time a disease has shown up in a blood test or a picture, it is late in the game! Your body can handle alot of stress before it begins to show signs and symptoms. Health is not merely the absence of symptoms or disease…after all, high blood pressure is called the “silent killer.” There usually are no signs of high blood pressure affecting you symptomatically. It is silent and does its work without you knowing.

This is how at our office we are able to save lives of you and your loved ones. We find the problem before it would ever prevent itself and educate you, the patient, on what needs to be done. We will take care of your “back pain” but we do so much more than that. We upregulate your nervous system so it can heal whatever is stressing the body out. Doesn’t this sound better than taking this drug with this side effect (which is false…because there is no such thing as a side effect…it is a direct effect) or undergoing this surgery for this or that. We need to take control of our health and establish responsibility.

Families who sign up with our office for our wellness program get the big idea! They know prevention will save them thousands in the long run. They know that they want to practice prevention and come in every week to make sure their body is functioning at an optimum level. They want to know what may be going on in their body and what steps they can take to prevent it…after all, money does not mean anything if you don’t have your health…wouldn’t you like to grow to a ripe old age just by having your autonomic nervous system checked every week showing you how awesome your body is doing? We actually have a $500 test that can show you this that is included monthly to show you objective evidence of how healthy you actually are. You can pay for this whenever you want to, but it is included in our wellness package.

I am always floored by people that start chiropractic and don’t continue. They are done once their pain is done…a ticking time bomb. I believe at that point it is my fault because I have failed them as a teacher. I didn’t show them how much value their is to chiropractic and prevention. I don’t get why someone would stop doing something that is helping them and promoting them to be more healthy! Chiropractic has been shown to increase the immune system by over 200%! Wouldn’t you want this for your family and your kids? If I knew that as a parent, I wouldn’t care what the price was because that in itself drives value. I would like to see my kids and family be as healthy as they can be.

What it comes down to is that chiropractic is a lifestyle. It is a lifestyle that consists of people striving for optimal health by controlling their stress levels, eating right, getting their spine checked weekly for nervous system interference, and exercising. As a doctor, this is what I am trying to create…wellness!

If you are ever interested in our private and exclusive wellness program where you get your supplements at wholesale and your HRV test (the $500 test for free), please send me an email or ask me about it at your next visit. I would love to include more families and individuals who are searching for how to be more healthy. It is a minimal cost for what you get…heck, after all, being able to prevent you from having this or that is worth its weight in gold…less sick days and having more fun with your friends and family…priceless!!!

So, lets try to start thinking about erecting a fence instead of waiting to fall off the cliff. Falling off the cliff takes too much recovery time and risks serious consequences, but putting up a fence prevents the fall and promotes a healthy lifestyle.

I will leave it up to everyone to decide, but I know deep down in all of your hearts you are all striving for better health. Why not take me on as your coach and lets get started!

Your health and wellness advocate,

Dr. James R. Haakenson

P.S. Sorry about the length, but I wanted to get my point across that we can improve your back pain, but more importantly find deeper health related problems keeping you from feeling the best you have ever felt in your life…let’s get everyone back to feeling like they are 20 again!!!!

Weekly, or biweekly I am intending to send out an email on health and wellness…so here it goes! And, if you ever have any burning questions you would like discussed, I will be willing to make that my next topic! As always, if you do not want these emails sent to you, please just send me back a kind email that you are not interested.

I labeled this email the flashing check engine light to tell you a few stories and then relate it back to what I mean by this.

There is a story of a lady that brought her car into the auto mechanic just before closing on a Friday night. She was frantic and said that her check engine light was on. All of the mechanics knew this could be anything and it could take awhile to figure out. No one wanted to help her because they were about ready to close. A young mechanic stepped up to the plate and said he would help her. The young mechanic took her car back to the shop and had it done in no less than 10 minutes! He brought the car up to her and said…”Mam, your car is fixed, no more check engine light!” She thanked him, paid her bill, and went on her way. After she left, the other mechanics wanted to know his secret. How could he fix her car that fast? He said it was simple, I reached under the dash and pulled out the lightbulb to light the check engine light! There you go…no more light…no more problem!

But wait just a second, the guy did not do anything to help her car, he simply just masked the condition by pulling out the bulb that kept the check engine light on.

The reason this is my topic is because of the fact that too many of us all are led to believe masking a condition with this or that makes us healthier! Does taking a high blood pressure, cholesterol, or anti-depressant really make us healthier? Of course they change the symptoms, but do they make us healthier? If all we are focused on is changing a number or a quality, have we done anything to change the course of the problem? For example, if we take a patient off high blood pressure or cholesterol medicine, will their numbers spike back to what they were or higher? If they do spike back up, does that mean the problem is still underlying and we have done nothing to fix the problem…only just mask it by manipulating a number here or there?

My point is we need to get back to the root of the problem. I know it is hard, but medicine should be used to buy us time. If we are diagnosed with this or that, we probably need to adapt a lifestyle change. We need to start eating better and exercising…the two hardest things to do. We need to start taking control of our health and prevent these maladies from occurring.

I know what you are asking, what is a chiropractor doing talking about this! I write about this because too much of us today are walking around and excepting whatever is thrown at us without questioning the doctor why do I have this? It has been documented time and time again that just simply taking all sugars out of your diet that are not in the form of a fruit or vegetable will dramatically lower your cholesterol in one month! Why don’t we prescribe this to our sufferers of high cholesterol? It has also been shown to lower high blood pressure. It is getting back to the basics. As a chiropractor, we teach our patients how to obtain a healthy lifestyle, not simply remove a “light bulb to mask the problem!”

Time and time again I am able to help people with their digestive troubles, cholesterol and blood pressure issues. Chiropractic is not about pain, but it is about tone of the nervous system and lifestyle coaching.

Many of you know that I talk alot about how chiropractic and acupuncture can find things that are subclinical…things that cannot yet be picked up by imaging, blood tests, or other various tests because it is not to the point of disease yet. Only in end stage of a disease are we able to pick things up on a test. Each and everyday I help someone who is traveling down the road for heart problems, digestive troubles, lung issues, etc. I can’t tell you if that problem is going to start tomorow or 20 years from now, but I know it has started. Just to know that it is there and is beginning is worth its weight in gold! Through our chiropractic examination we are able to tell all sorts of things about the function of your organs. With each adjustment we prevent disease and save lives! We also fine tune nutrition for each and every patient with nutrition response testing allowing us to give that organ the correct nutritional support!

This is why we have a family wellness program. We have families coming in every week to get checked to make sure their body is functioning the best it can. Yes, they do pay a premium for this, but what is it worth to you to be able to live longer and be more mobile for your later years??? What is it worth to you to watch your children grow up and not be as sick as some of their peers. We save lives and promote health at our clinic. We do treat pain, but nine times out of ten there is a bigger problem…the pain is the just the check engine light! Why would we only relieve your pain and not take care of the major problem that is crying out for help? Your organs all….let me say this again…All of your organs reflex to your back when they are under stress or diseased…this is very important…these reflexes show up as tight back muscles! Many people think it is posture related, but trust me, most of it is organ related and is subclinical. We can help these organs from continuing down the line until they hit the disease state…where it will show up in a blood test or a picture of some sort. As a chiropractor we can work with you to prevent this!

This requires a new paradigm shift and is one that the patient needs to fully understand what health is and where it comes from. The shift would be one of prevention and of one that you come in for care even when you don’t hurt! What a concept! The best time to be adjusted is when you don’t have the check engine light on! Imagine what your life would be like with a once a week adjustment, and perfect nutrition. We have so many happy families and individuals because of this program. We would be happy to set something up for you and your family!

Please remember the check engine light story….the light is only the tip of the iceberg…we can see the top of the iceberg but we can’t see what lies underneath…and if you have ever seen a picture of an iceburg, the tip we see is nothing compared to what lies beneath. It is what lies beneath that I am after and here to help you with. Lets change in 2008 and make this the healthiest year ever!

Your health and wellness advocate,

Dr. James
